Eurovision Mania #3 Top 5 by odds
Hello friends!
Spring is starting to make its appearance here in the UK, meaning that Eurovision month is getting closer! All the countries have now released their songs, and with the newest entries Eurovision starts to look really exciting this year. In this post I decided to talk about the top 5 songs by odds that are the favorites to win this year's contest. But firstly I will introduce you to how the odds work so you can get a better understanding. Make a brew and let's go☕
How do odds work?
Odd is the probability of an event happening (in our case a country winning the ESC). The higher the odd, the less likely the country will win the competition. The lower the odd, the most likely this country will win the contest. There are 3 different factors that can influence the odds:
- Betting trends: Bookmakers constantly analyse which participants their customers place their bets on. If a lot of customers bet on a specific song, it is a hint that this song is considered to be good. Therefore the bookmakers will automatically lower this song's odds.
- History: Historical statistics have a great influence on how the odds-makers price each participant's song. If a country has a successful history in Eurovision, such as Sweden or Ukraine, that is taken into account and they get better odds. If a country never won Eurovision, such as Cyprus, then it starts with high odds. This particularly happens at the beginning stages before songs are released.
- Evaluation: Based on the song quality. This can be subjective, but they evaluate whether the song can be suitable for Eurovision.
And let's see where are the winning odds this year!
5. Greece
I am so happy to see that Greece is in the top 5 countries (and not because I am biased). Although I am not a big fan of ballads in Eurovision, Die Together is special. Amanda's voice is magical, and the lyrics reflect the pain of her break up and you can see that she is the songwriter of her own song. Even though it doesn't scream Greece (it is in English and there are not Greek elements) it is a strong entry for Greece. You should also watch the video clip for some beautiful shots of Symi island 😊
4. UK
They are up in space maaaan! Finally UK decided to invest time and effort for this year's contest by sending a song that is actually really good. I really wanted UK to take it seriously and finish in a good place this year-which I think they have a great chance. Sam Ryder is tiktok star but with his vocals he will get out of the tiktok screen and become a label artist! The song is so unique and dreamy, and with a great staging it will definitely land on the top 10.
3. Sweden
This is not an unusual place for the Eurovision titans. They take Eurovision really seriously by hosting an annual song competition since 1959, Melodifestivalen, to choose their competing song. This year's winner is Cornelia Jakobs with Hold Me Closer, which was the favourite of many! It is a great song with a great performance-and many chances of landing in the top 5.
2. Italy
I was surprised to see that Brividi is placed second and not first (if you see my previous post I rated it as my favourite Eurovision song for 2022). Italy has great (if not the most chances) of winning, with a really strong ballad and well-known Italian artists, including the Eurovision loved Mahmood. Will Italy make it back to back?
1.Ukraine
Ukraine has confirmed its participation to this year's contest with a recorded performance from a safe place in Ukraine. But even before that odd-makers placed it in the 1st position. This is a bit controversial because many people believe that it is not the entry song but the unfortunate situation that places them at the top of the odds. Stefania by Kalush Orchestra is an up-beating and catchy song, that brings rhythm, dance and party vibes in the Eurovision, which is what fans want! Will it be the winner of this year's contest?
💙💙💙
With those 5 countries being the favorites to win-it is only odds and doesn't mean anything! Eurovision is a contest where you expect the unexpected, and that is one of the excitements of it. Hope you enjoyed today's post and let me know if you agree with the bookmakers odds!
See you soon,
Sofia :)
