United by music

Hello everyone and happy Wednesday!

It is only 76 days to Eurovision 2023 and many countries have selected their entry song through their national competitions. Also the logo and slogan of the contest has been revealed, and in this post I will write about the background of that selection and also take a trip to Eurovision slogans through the years!

💙💛💙💛

European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has reveled the slogan and theme artwork for this year's contest end of January, which is 'United By Music'. The new slogan demonstrates the unique partnership of this year's contest between the United Kingdom, Ukraine and Host City Liverpool. It is the first time when the winning country won't host the contest due to the unfortunate event of the war (there have been 6 previous occasions in which a different nation hosted due to financial reasons). This slogan shows the collaboration of the two countries to bring the ESC to audiences across the globe and the incredible power of music to bring communities together. It also reflects the very origins of the contest, which was developed to bring Europe closer together through a shared television experience across different countries.

The artwork is a string of hearts with the effect of a colourful electrocardiogram in colours inspired by the Ukrainian and United Kingdom flags. They represent the collective beating hearts of the millions of people that watch the contest every year. Also the font used for the slogan is called Penny Lane, and it is inspired by the 20th century cast-iron signs displaying Liverpool street names and a nod to the city's rich musical heritage.

This logo was designed through a creative partnership between the English Superunion agency and the Starlight Creative in Ukraine.

Eurovision slogans through the years

Since 2002 each country created its own slogan accompanying the theme artwork when hosting. The first one was Estonia's 'A Modern Fairytale' in 2002. Slogans can be inspired by the core values of Eurovision in promoting unity, such as 'Under the same sky', 'We are one', 'Come together' among others. They can also represent the host nation itself, showing the country's history and tradition. Examples are Ukraine's slogan in 2005 'Awakening' , following the changes which occurred in Ukraine earlier that year, or Azerbaijan's 'Light your Fire', as a representation of their nickname ‘Land of Fire’. Do you remember the previous 20 slogans? Which one is your favourite? Mine is 'Feel the Rhythm!' and 'Dare to Dream'.
