Eurovision mania #4 Euro-facts

Hello friends!

If you are reading this it means you either can't wait for Eurovision or you became a Eurovision maniac by reading through these posts (or you are a really good friend by supporting this blog). No matter the reason you are here, welcome to the Eurovision mania no.4! In this post I decided to take a trip to memory lane and talk about previous ESCs, statistics, figures and lots of euro-facts. Hope you learn something new, grab a cuppa and enjoy ☕

Eurovision 1960 scoreboard

Figures

  • The first ESC was in 1956 with only 7 participating countries and was the only contest with 2 songs per country.
  • First and second Semi-finals were introduced in 2004 and 2008 respectively, since the participating countries kept increasing.
  • The most successful country at the contest is Ireland with 7 victories, followed by Sweden (6) and Luxembourg, France, Netherlands and UK (5).
  • Norway came last the most times-11 times at the bottom of the scoreboard (That doesn't make them the most unsuccessful country since they won the contest 3 times: 1985-1995-2009).
  • Even the contest took place 64 times-it has 67 winners! This is because in 1969 4 countries topped the scoreboard- UK, Spain, Netherlands and France.

Facts

  • ABBA is the most successful Eurovision Song Contest winner- they won in 1974 and enjoyed worldwide success ever since. Other contestants who have had successful careers after Eurovision include Celine Dion, Cliff Richard and Julio Iglesias.

  • Johnny Logan won the contest 3 times: in 1980 and 1987 while performing with Ireland, and in 1992 by writing the Irish winning entry Why Me?

  • The most covered ESC song is Domenico Mudugno's "Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu" from 1958, also known as Volare. The song has been covered by famous stars such as Dean Martin, Cliff Richard, David Bowie and many more
  • From 1956 to 1998 all the songs were accompanied by a live orchestra. From 1999 and onwards the orchestra was dropped, so the entries could use recorded backing track during their performances.

  • Cyprus is the country that participated the most times while never had a victory (one day it will happen!).
The highest place Cyprus achieved in ESC was second with Fuego by Eleni Foureira in 2018.

  • This year is the first time that there aren't any songs in French in the contest!  Not even France themselves, who are singing in Breton.
