Liverpool 2023
Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog!
After a long break I am excited to start writing about Eurovision again,
especially this year when it’s going to happen only 79 km away from me! This is
the closest I was ever to the contest and to my dream of attending a Eurovision
Song Contest. For those who don’t know, Liverpool will host the 67th ESC
on behalf of Ukraine at the Liverpool M&S arena. The grand final will take place on
Saturday 13th of May with semi-finals on 9th and
11th of May. Tickets are not on sale yet and the release date
hasn’t been announced, but rumors say that it’s going to happen soon!
For the first Eurovision post of the year I decided to write about the city
of Liverpool, some historical facts, sights and attractions for those who are
visiting soon or for those who are planning to in the future! So get a cup of
coffee and let’s take a walk down to Penny Lane…
You might know Liverpool as the hometown of Liverpool F.C or of the most
famous British band, but it is a city of many sights and history! Here are some
facts about the city:
- Home of the Beatles
Liverpool is the home of the 'Four Lads Who Shook the World', one
of the greatest bands in the history of music! You can visit the Beatles Story
museum at the Albert Dock, where you can learn everything about them-from how
they met, their early days as members of The Quarrymen to their endless
performances at the Cavern Club and the Beatlemania phenomenon sweeping over
the globe. You can also walk at Mathew street where the famous Cavern Club is
located and also several pubs formerly frequented by the band. Hardcore Beatles
fans can also visit the Strawberry Field, where John Lennon used to play as a
child and inspired him to write the single Strawberry Fields forever.
- The city has the most
museums outside London
Who knew that
Liverpool has the most museums in the UK, excluding London of course. If
you want to learn about the sporting history of the city, the culture and people
of Liverpool or just admire some art-there is a museum for everything. Some of
the national museums that Liverpool has include: George's world museum, Walker
Art Gallery, Tate Liverpool, Marseyside Maritime Museum and Museum of
Liverpool, the first museum in the UK dedicated to the story of one city.
· Europe’s longest
established Chinese community
Liverpool's China town is one of Europe’s oldest Chinese communities. This
was established back in the days where Liverpool and Shanghai ports were connected
for the export of many ingredients, mainly silk and cotton wool. There are
several authentic Chinese restaurants and supermarkets around the city, and
over 10,000 Chinese people live there!
· It is a UNESCO world
heritage site
Liverpool has a UNESCO world heritage status, making it a member of a
group of world heritage monuments such as the Taj Mahal, Stonehenge, Venice and
the Great Wall of China. This is for its extensive collection of the 19th
through early 20th century buildings as well as its role in world history.
Liverpool was a leader in developing the dock building, port administration and
international trade networks through the 18th, 19th and
early 20th centuries.
· City of pop
Liverpool is not only the home of the Beatles, but many other bands such
as Atomic Kitten, The Wombats and
Ladytron also come from there. Several number one hit singles have been produced in the city,
leading to its designation as ‘City of Pop’ by the Guinness World records in 2001
and a UNESCO City of Music in 2015.
· And here is a spooky
fact about Liverpool…
St John’s gardens were once used as a graveyard for the poor people. Although
many graves have been removed, there are still tens of thousands of bodies
there. So when you walk around you could be walking over the collective graves
of around 82,000 people!
I hope you enjoy learning those facts about Liverpool! It is a beautiful
city and I am really happy that it is the host of the Eurovision Song Contest
2023 on behalf of Ukraine. I am sure Liverpudlians will put on a great show!
Have a great week and stay tuned for more Eurovision updates!
Sofia :)
