Rock in ESC 2023
Rock in Eurovision 2023
The countdown to the big week has already started with only 24 days left. The heart of Europe is beating in Eurovision rhythm and the excitement is getting bigger and bigger per day. Liverpool is busy getting ready to welcome people from all over the globe with updates and party announcements coming out every day. The pre-party season is on its peak with the artists traveling around Europe and performing their songs live. The last official pre-party is the London Eurovision Party which is happening this Sunday, and I will be there! I can’t wait to see all the artists live and dance to Eurovision songs all night long (let me know if you would like a post about it).
As mentioned in my previous post, two trending genres of this year’s contest is pop and rock. Today I will talk about rock in ESC 2023 and introduce you to some of those entries. Grab a brew and let’s go!
💙💛💛💛💙
- Slovenia (Joker Out-‘Carpe Diem’)
Joker Out will represent Slovenia with their song ‘Carpe Diem’. They were formed in 2016 and are one of Slovenia’s most successful groups, with chart success and sold-out gigs across the country. Carpe Diem is a modern-rock song written in Slovenian, and the title comes from the Latin phrase ‘seize the day’. It is a song about making the best of the present day, living life to the fullest as if there is no tomorrow. Can these rockers get Slovenia the magic ticket to the final after a 2-year non-qualifying streak? According to the odds, there is a 76% chance they can.
- Australia (Voyager-‘Promise’)
The 5-piece Aussie rockers from Perth will perform their song ‘Promise’ in Liverpool next month. They have been performing as a band since 1999 and are massive Eurofans, having tried many times to compete since Australia joined the contest in 2015. This year they finally made it and have been selected by the Australian broadcaster SBS to travel from Perth all the way to Liverpool to perform their synth-metal song ‘Promise’ . Have you ever done anything like this before?
- Germany (Lord of the Lost-Blood and Glitter)
Germany will be represented this year by the gothic -glam-metal group Lord of The Lost. The band from Hamburg were formed in 2007 and since then grew really big. They are that big that after Liverpool they will start touring with Iron Meiden for the European leg of their tour. They will sing ‘Blood and Glitter’, a song title containing two opposite words, representing that humans can have different characteristics and flaws that make them whole. “With broken wings, we’ll learn to fly”.
- Latvia (Sudden Lights-‘Aija’)
The indie-rock band Sudden Lights have got their ticket to Liverpool by winning Latvia’s selection contest ‘Supernova’. They were formed in 2012 as students at music school, and since then they are one of Latvia’s most-streamed artists. They will perform their song Aija, an indie-rock ballad with deep-meaning. "Aijā" is about love, care and concern about a loved one. It is inspired from a Latvian lullaby, adding a beautiful and soothing atmosphere to the song. Even that the song is in English, the title is in Latvian, with a word that cannot be translated as it’s traditional to Latvian folk tradition.
- Ireland (Wild Youth-We are one)
Wild Youth, a 4 piece pop-rock band, secured their place in Liverpool by winning the 'Late Late Show' and representing Ireland in this year’s contest. They were formed in Dublin in 2016 and their energetic performances and catchy rock-pop harmonies have led them to many number-one hits. “We Are One” is a pop-rock song celebrating togetherness, unity and diversity. “We might be different, we might be unique, you might be a leader, I might be a freak, and we might be different but under the falling sun, tonight we are one” they will sing in Liverpool.
